Dry Needling
Dry needling is a highly effective treatment technique used by our physiotherapists, Jayne Tilley and Morgan Dinn, to relieve muscle pain, reduce tension, and restore normal movement. It involves the use of very fine, sterile needles inserted into specific trigger points within tight or dysfunctional muscles.

WHAT IS DRY NEEDLING?
Dry needling targets myofascial trigger points—tight bands or knots in muscle tissue that can cause pain, stiffness, weakness, and referred pain patterns. By inserting a thin needle directly into these areas, we stimulate a healing response that helps:

-
Release muscle tension
-
Improve blood flow
-
Reduce local and referred pain
-
Restore normal muscle function
-
Improve flexibility and mobility

Unlike acupuncture, which is based on traditional Chinese medicine principles, dry needling is grounded in modern anatomy, neurophysiology, and evidence-based physiotherapy practice.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
When the needle is inserted into a trigger point, it may produce a small involuntary muscle twitch. This response helps reset the muscle, decrease tightness, and reduce pain signals being sent to the brain. The treatment also promotes increased circulation and supports the body’s natural healing processes.
WHAT CONDITIONS CAN DRY NEEDLING HELP WITH?
Dry needling can be effective for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:
-
Neck and shoulder pain
-
Lower back pain
-
Tension headaches and migraines
-
Sports injuries
-
Tendinopathies
-
Hip and knee pain
-
Muscle strains and overuse injuries
Your physiotherapist will complete a thorough assessment to determine whether dry needling is appropriate for your condition and treatment goals.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING TREATMENT
Dry needling sessions are typically brief and performed as part of a broader physiotherapy treatment plan, which may include manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation, and movement retraining.
You may feel:
-
A mild ache or cramping sensation.
-
A quick muscle twitch.
-
Temporary soreness afterward (similar to post-exercise soreness).
Most people tolerate the treatment very well, and any post-treatment discomfort usually settles within 24–48 hours.
IS DRY NEEDLING SAFE?
Yes. When performed by a qualified and trained physiotherapist, dry needling is considered a safe and effective treatment. We use single-use, sterile needles and follow strict hygiene and clinical safety guidelines.

If you’re unsure whether dry needling is right for you, our team will be happy to discuss your concerns and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.
